What is a CSC Plate and why is it Important?
Shipping containers must have a safety approval plate known as the CSC plate, as required by the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC). This plate serves as proof that the container has successfully undergone safety and quality inspections, meeting international standards. It contains vital information like tare weight, maximum gross weight, date of manufacture, dimensions, and identification numbers. Validity of a CSC plate spans five years, necessitating another test thereafter to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Types of Container Inspections
Container inspections can be broadly classified into two categories: In-Service Inspections and Off-Hire Inspections. The purpose of an In-Service inspection is to ensure the container is in optimal condition while it is being used, without any damages or weaknesses that might jeopardize the safety of its contents. On the other hand, an Off-Hire Inspection takes place when the container is no longer being utilized and before returning it to the owner’s depot. Its aim is to identify any existing damage, assess the cost of repair, and determine if it is economically viable to restore the container. Container Inspection Checklist
The industry has no standard container inspection checklist that applies to all containers. However, there are some key elements that must be included in the inspection:
– General condition of the container, including dents, rust, and holes.
– The condition of the floor, walls, and ceiling.
– The condition and functionality of the container’s doors and hinges, as well as locking mechanisms.
– The state of the rubber seals around the doorframe and any other openings in the container.
– Check for previous repairs that comply with the CSC’s standards.
