New vs Used Shipping Containers: Which Should You Buy?
Whether you’re building a container home, setting up secure storage, or it is a company purchase, intended to expand your logistics fleet, choosing between a new, used, or refurbished shipping container can significantly affect your cost, durability, and long-term satisfaction. Below, we’ll break down the key differences to help you make an informed decision.
-
New Shipping Containers
Condition
A NEW container, often called “one-trip”, has made only a single journey from the manufacturer (typically in Asia) to its first destination. It’s in near-perfect condition with no rust, dents, or patches.
Average Cost
- 20ft new container: Typically ranges from $3,000 to $5,000 USD
- 40ft new container: Around $5,000 to $7,500 USD
Prices depend on steel costs, shipping location, other unique features (like double doors or having a full openside) and availability
Lifespan
A new container can last 25+ years with minimal maintenance, especially if kept on dry ground and regularly treated to prevent corrosion.
Best for You If:
- Want modern features like a lockbox (this protects your container locking area both from tampering and from the elements).
- Another new container feature is fork lift pockets which makes moving the container much easier.
- A one-trip container has a premium appearance – especially important if the container is prominently placed or is part of the aesthetic.
- You need maximum durability and lifespan
-
Used Shipping Containers
Condition
Used containers are typically graded as Cargo Worthy (CW), Wind and Watertight (WWT). There is a 3rd grade called As-Is, but these are broken and need repairs, we do not sell As-Is since customers will absolutely be unhappy with this grade container.
Used Containers (Wind and Water Tight and Cargo Worthy) show visible wear and tear—scratches, dents, and sometimes light surface rust—but remain structurally sound.
Average Cost
- 20ft used container: Around $1,500 to $3,000 USD
- 40ft used container: Around $2,500 to $4,000 USD
This is nearly half the cost of a new container, making it very attractive for budget-conscious buyers.
Lifespan
Used containers generally last 10–15 years, depending on their prior use and maintenance after purchase.
Best for You If:
- You’re looking for cost-effective storage or workspace
- You don’t mind cosmetic flaws
- You’re planning short- to medium-term use

Which Should You Choose?
Choose New: if you want long-term reliability, pristine appearance, or are converting it for residential or commercial projects.
Choose Used: if you need a quick, inexpensive storage option or a temporary structure.
New and used shipping containers all have unique advantages. The best choice depends on budget, intended use, and aesthetic requirements. Whatever you select, ensure you purchase from a trusted supplier who provides accurate grading and inspection reports.
