Understanding Your Shipping Container Delivery Options

When it comes time for the delivery of your shipping container, it’s crucial to understand the options available to you. Choosing the correct equipment can save you both time and money.

At American Conex, we partner with a variety of third-party trucking companies to deliver empty shipping containers. Our standard delivery option is ground delivery, which primarily uses tilt bed trucks, Landoll trailers, and rollback trucks.

Tilt Bed Trucks

Tilt bed trucks are the most common type of vehicle used for delivering 20ft shipping containers. These trucks have a short bed mounted on the chassis that can tilt. They are designed to carry empty shipping containers, which typically weigh around 5,000 lbs. The container is loaded onto the truck at the depot using a container handler. Upon arrival at the delivery site, the driver raises the hydraulic bed until the rear corners of the container touch the ground, then carefully drives forward to slide the container off onto the ground.

Landoll Trailers and Tilt Bed Trailers

For the ground delivery of 40ft shipping containers, we use Landoll trailers and tilt bed trailers. These trailers can be towed by either a hot shot light-duty truck or a heavy-duty tractor. The tractor-trailer setup can carry both empty and loaded shipping containers, while the hot shot is limited to lighter, empty containers. Hot shot deliveries offer the benefit of four-wheel drive and a short wheelbase, allowing access to more challenging delivery sites.

Flatbed Trucks and Chassis Type Trailers

For bulk purchases or long-distance deliveries from our depot, we can provide lower delivery rates using flatbed trucks or chassis-type trailers. In these cases, the customer must have equipment on-site to unload the containers. 20ft containers have forklift pockets, so a standard 3-ton forklift can unload them. Most 40ft containers, however, lack forklift pockets and require a crane for unloading.

Live Loading on a Chassis

Live loading on a chassis is an option for customers who are exporting a shipping container from a port. We can deliver your empty container to your site on a chassis-type trailer. The driver will stay on-site for live loading, and you will be billed by the hour. You will need a ramp or loading dock to access the container, as it will be four or five feet off the ground. If you need more time to load your container, the trailer can be left on-site, and the tractor will return to pick up the loaded container on another day. In this case, you will be billed a daily rental fee for the chassis, typically around $40.
