Shipping Container Sizes & Availability

The two most popular sizes of shipping containers available in North American are 20 ft and 40 ft units. The number 20 or 40 refers the external length of the container. All conex units that are shipped by sea are made to an international standard width of 8 feet. The 53ft containers are the only exception. The 53 foot units are made to conform to rail transport standards – these measure 9ft 6in wide.

In North America the depots with the largest number of containers in stock (as well as sizes, grades and variations) will be found at our coastal depots such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Miami. These depots are located closest to the largest sea ports in the USA.

Land locked locations like Denver, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Louisville and Salt Lake City will usually have less availability. The more common sizes and grades will be available but other sizes and grades may be more difficult to source.

American Conex are able to transport your container order to any location within the lower 48 states. Should you require a specific size container shipped to your location, contact our sales staff for a delivery price quote.

Standard vs High Cube:

Standard shipping containers have a height of 8ft 6in tall and High Cube are 9ft 6in tall. American Conex stocks both height variations. Our most popular seller in 40ft containers is the High Cube (HC) size. In general, customers only purchase standard (STD) 40ft containers if their delivery site has height restrictions.

The standard for 20 foot containers is 8ft 6in height. High Cube units are rarely available in 20ft units, although they are in high demand. The majority of shipping containers that are available in North America are either 20ft standard or 40ft High Cube. If you need a slightly larger unit you may consider a 45ft container, but again the availability of these is limited.
