Shipping Container Sizes & Availability
In North America, the shipping container market is primarily dominated by two sizes: the 20 ft and 40 ft units. When we refer to the numbers 20 or 40, we are describing the external length of the container. All conex units transported via sea adhere to an international standard width of 8 feet, with the exception being the 53 ft containers. The 53 ft units are specifically designed to meet rail transport standards, measuring 9 ft 6 in wide.
Our coastal depots in North America, such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, and Miami, house the largest inventory of containers in various sizes, grades, and variations. Situated near the major sea ports of the USA, these depots offer unparalleled accAccessibility may vary depending on the location. Landlocked cities such as Denver, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Louisville, and Salt Lake City might have limited availability. While common sizes and grades are usually accessible, sourcing other sizes and grades may pose more challenges. Our team will work with you and your budget to find the container size and quality you want by searching our storage depots in nearby markets if your nearest location is out of inventory.
American Conex is able to transport your container order to any location within the lower 48 states and Canada. Should you require a specific size container shipped to your location, contact our sales staff for a delivery price quote.
Standard vs High Cube:
Standard shipping containers have a height of 8ft 6in tall and High Cube are 9ft 6in tall. American Conex stocks both height variations. Our most popular seller in 40ft containers is the High Cube (HC) size. In general, customers only purchase standard (STD) 40ft containers if their delivery site has height restrictions.
The standard for 20 foot containers is 8ft 6in height. High Cube units are rarely available in 20ft units, although they are in high demand. The majority of shipping containers that are available in North America are either 20ft standard or 40ft High Cube. If you need a slightly larger unit you may consider a 45ft container, but again the availability of these is limited.
